Founded in 1953 by the Georgetown University Alumni Association, the Athletic Hall of Fame originally recognized over 100 former athletes at the University following the dropping of major college football at the University two years earlier. In 1975, a tradition of biennial (now annual) ceremonies was begun.

The Hall was not a hall, per se: a plaque at McDonough Gymnasium stood as the only point of recognition for nearly 40 years until a formal site was dedicated at the Leavey Center in 1994. Today, visitors to the building can view bas-relief plaques honoring selections from 28 different Georgetown sports. Additional details on the awardees are also shown in video boards at the John R. Thompson Athletic Center.

Sixty two players and three coaches from the sport of football have been elected to the Georgetown Athletic Hall of Fame since its founding in 1953. By rule, entrants must have played on a varsity sport for at least one season, so those student-athletes who completed their careers entirely within the club football era (1964 through 1969) are not eligible.
